Event Name: | The Overview Effect – Space and Our Connected Humanity |
Event Description: | Date: Thursday, October 7, 2021, time 10AM-11AM Pacific Time Throughout history, humanity has looked at the sky with a combined sense of awe and fear that has shaped its existence and evolution. Our relationship with the Universe, as individuals and as a society at large, provides the context to explore our anguish with respect to the fragile finitude of life. The fascinating evolution of Human Space Flight has given humans the opportunity to turn that angle around, look back at planet Earth, their only home amongst the stars, and realize its uniqueness and humbling minusculeness. This has also marked the beginning of a “cognitive shift in awareness” regarding humankind’s purpose in the vast canvas of the Universe. Experienced by only astronauts early on, this “overview effect” has been amplified recently through the incredible imagery collected via Earth Observation activities as well as the new opportunities under accelerated development that will enable any individual to ultimately experience space flight and the overview effect. Join us on an exciting panel discussing how space flight can move humanity forward to a more united and connected society here on Earth by creating global awareness and enlightenment through the Overview Effect while also supporting its peaceful expansion into outer space through orbital outposts as well as settlements on the Moon and Mars. Moderator: Ari Eisenstat, United Nations Association, University of Hawai`i Research Center for Future Studies Panelists: José M. Hernández, Astronaut and Engineer (C) Frank White, Author “The Overview Effect” (C) Claudia Welss, Chairwoman of the Board, IONS (C) Rachel Lyons, Executive Director, Space For Humanity (TBC) |
