| Event Name: | Model Mars Mini-Challenges: When Enough is Not Enough |
| Event Description: | As part of the World Space Week 2022 observance, October 4-10, the Model Mars team will launch new challenges about how humans living on Mars in 2075 will address challenges relating to this year’s theme, “Space and Sustainability.” All are invited to participate by logging on to a virtual Martian meet-up on Saturday, October 8 at 14:00 UTC during which mini-challenges will unfold: One settlement’s eco-system, which depends on solar collection and a back-up nuclear fission system to generate energy, is no longer manufacturing and allocating enough resources for all. No one knows why, but the prime suspect is the Artificial Intelligence (AI) managed Auto Resources Allotment System (ARAS). What to do? The Mars Commons, an area shared and maintained by all Mars residents, is preparing to host the first planetary MarsFest. AI-managed devices are directing trillions of cloud-bots to build an infrastructure to generate resources for all who attend (virtually or in person), but no one can determine how many will show up and what types of performances, exhibitions or interactive activities will be submitted. How can humans and machines work together to ensure there will be enough resource support for MarsFest and make the Festival available to as many people as possible? These mini-challenges – and more – will unfold in a two-hour Zoom session, during which all who log on will work alongside experienced Model Mars teams to learn about sustainable systems on Mars and to resolve issues on Mars that can also help those on other worlds live more sustainable lives. |
