| Event Description: | An ecological term that describes how biological systems remain diverse and productive over time. Sustainability for humans is the ability to preserve the quality of life we live in the long term, which in turn depends on the conservation of the natural world and the responsible use of natural resources. The term sustainability has become so widespread and can be applied to almost every facet of life on Earth, from the local to the global and over different time periods. Wet areas and healthy forests are examples of sustainable biosystems. Subtle biochemical cycles redistribute water, oxygen, nitrogen and carbon in the world's living and nonliving systems, and have ensured lasting life for millions of years. But as the number of people, the inhabitants of this earth, increased, the natural ecosystems declined and the change in the balance of natural cycles had a negative impact on both humans and other living systems. There is ample scientific evidence that humanity is living in an unsustainable way, and that bringing human use of natural resources back within sustainable limits requires a significant collective effort. More sustainable livelihoods can take many forms, ranging from reorganizing living conditions (for example, eco-villages, eco-towns, sustainable cities), reassessing economic sectors (permaculture, green buildings, sustainable agriculture), or labor practices ( sustainable architecture), using science to develop new technologies (environmental technology, renewable energy), to make modifications to individual lifestyles that conserve natural resources. |
