Event Description: | Invitation only due to limited space. Discussion and video presentation on 4 October starting at 1800 hours on the contribution of space science and technologies to CLIMATE CHANGE: UN Decade on Restoration monitoring Climate Change: The evidence from Space (esa.int) FOOD SECURITY: SPACE APPLICATIONS The amount of food necessary to sustain a crew during a long-duration mission to Mars would prohibitively increase the mass of spacecraft and the overall cost of the mission. A possibility to alleviate this problem could be the use of plant systems as food sources or for regenerative life support systems. The biomass production systems may also be used as a filtration system for water and atmospheric gases. Seven Ways the ISS Helps Study Plant Growth | NASA EARTH APPLICATIONS: As less fertile land becomes available to grow food, alternative agricultural systems that efficiently produce greater quantities of high-quality crops will be increasingly important. Data from the operation of the BPS will advance greenhouse and controlled-environment agricultural systems and will help farmers produce better, healthier crops in a small space using the optimum amount of nutrients. 4 October until 3 November during office hours MOON SEEDS FotoArt exhibition inspired by a joint STEM education collaboration that connects Artemis I programming to Earth science, data literacy and citizen science, a “new generation” of Moon Tree seeds bound for lunar orbit. Report on the Results: | 27 participants (8 persons for workshop and 19 visitors to the exhibition) WSW 2022 contribution of UNESCO Club Vienna. Part I Video Presentation and Discussion using on-line videos from NASA. Part II PhotoArt Exhibition of plant cultivation in space by NASA as well as the Moon Seed project that returns seeds to earth for planting. We also featured the launch into space of seeds as part of the payload on Artemis 1. The exhibition was extended due to the delay of the launch of Artemis. Featured as poster exhibit was a collage of Giant Sequoia endangered by fires in Yosemite National Park due to climate change and the launch of Artemis 1. The park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. |
