Event Description: | Space Foundation Discovery Center is hosting a day to celebrate the Annular Eclipse of 2023! Annular eclipses occur when the distances between the Sun, Moon and Earth are such that the Moon’s shadow does not quite cover the Sun’s surface when viewed from Earth. An annulus, or “ring of fire,” is left around the Sun during the maximum coverage. Come to the Discovery Center as we observe the October 2023 Annular Eclipse together! Families will receive a free pair of eclipse glasses to take home, in addition to receiving resources to prepare for the April 2024 Total Solar Eclipse. The Colorado Springs Astronomical Society (CSASTRO) will also be joining us outside with their solar telescopes. They can’t wait to tell you all about the eclipse! CSASTRO Logo 9:00 a.m. Discovery Center opens 10:28 a.m. Annularity maximum (solar viewing outside with telescopes from 9:09 a.m. – 11:56 a.m.) 1:00 p.m. Workshop*: DIY Solar Viewer (take one home to save for the April 2024 Total Solar Eclipse!) 2:00 p.m. Guest Speaker Dr. Steve Ruskin talks about the Great Solar Eclipse of 1878 *$5.00 activity fee |
