Event Name: | The Perils of Landing on Mars |
Event Description: | Door open 7:30 for 8:00pm. £3.50 for non-members Exploring Mars is a key step towards solving some enduring mysteries and may provide answers to questions about our own origins, how and when life emerged on Earth, and whether we are truly alone in the Universe. Mars has proved a notoriously tricky planet on which to land a spacecraft, and next attempt will be by ESA on 19th October with the Schiaparelli probe, a vehicle carried by the Trace Gas Orbiter (TGO). Both craft are part of ESA’s ExoMars project. This is an excellent opportunity to hear about the next planned landing on Mars just 1 week before the event. Dr Lewis is Deputy Head of the School of Physical Sciences at The Open University. He co-leads the AMELIA (Atmospheric Mars Entry and Landing Investigation and Analysis) on Schiaparelli in order to retrieve the scientific information form the entry profile and he is a member of the NOMAD (Nadir and Occultation for MArs Discovery) team, which is an instrument aboard the ExoMars Trace Gas Orbiter. |
