Event Name:  Gravitational Waves Revealed
Event Description:  Discover more about mysterious gravitational waves, formed hundreds of millions of years ago, but discovered in 2015. Hundreds of millions of years ago, two black holes, each much more massive than our sun, collided in the depths of space. The resulting distortion to space and time surged outwards at the speed of light and was detected last September: by moving some mirrors by less than the radius of an atom… Gravitational Waves research is a field of astronomy fundamentally unlike any other, and in this talk Royal Observatory Greenwich astronomer Dr Edward Bloomer will explore why they are so important to our understanding of the universe. We will discuss the sources that create them and why we expected them in the first place (perhaps whether you can make some of your own too!), and look at the monumental effort the scientific community has gone to in order to actually measure them with the most sensitive detectors on Earth. 18:30-19:30
