| Event Name: | Space Festival - “Remote Sensing” |
| Event Description: | “Space Festival – Remote Sensing” in Effat University is an event organized for Effat university community to increase the awareness of space. The festival is aimed to engage the attendees in the theme of this year “Remote Sensing: Enabling our Future” in an entertaining framework. Festival activates include: 1. Explore Space: Google Earth station, astronomy apps station, virtual reality games, galaxy Immersion experience room, and remote sensing booklets. 2. Movies: earth remote sensing documentaries and space themed movie. 3. Art Activities: space themed glass painting workshop, gallery and art show and, face painting. 4. And also: space themed photo booth, cookies, ice cream, cotton candy, and Spatial phone cover. |

| Report on the Results: | Effat University’s Participation in the 2016 World Space Event Effat University participated in the 2016 World Space Week joining various academic institution in Saudi Arabia that acknowledge this global event. Effat University launched a “Space Festival” event on Monday Oct 17th from 12:00 PM to 4:00 PM. The World Space Week was recognized in Saudi Arabia in the week of Oct 17th as approved by World Space Week organization due the Holy Hajj holiday break. The Space Festival was attended by Effat University community including faculty, students, non-teaching staff as well as daycare staff and students. The selected event date and time was within the allocated extracurricular activities time frame, which increased the flexibility of festival attendance. The event was organized by Dr. Kholoud Khateeb of the Effat College of Engineering and a team of 38 students led by Ms. Mawadah Darb – a senior student in the Department of Information Systems. The event attendance reached approximately 280 people. All the festival activates were in Effat University Library and Cultural Museum. Festival Activities The Space Festival in Effat University was enriched with diversified activities that promote an enjoyable learning experience. 1. Movies and Documentaries 1.1 Space themed Movie show “The Martian” movie was selected for the event to demonstrate the details of a space mission to Mars and increase the awareness about the mentioned planet and its atmosphere. The Art Activities 2.1 Gallery and Art Show The Architecture Department in Effat University participated with various space themed artistic works and activities. 3. Explore Space 3.1 Google Earth Station Three Google Earth stations were made available for attendees to learn using Google Earth technology in exploring earth from space. 3.2 A 3D Fully Immersive Virtual Space Corner Light and sound effects were used to create a 3D fully immersive virtual space corner to simulate an outer space experience. 3.3 Space Themed Mobile App A booth was assigned for the attendees to use space themed visual realty mobile applications and games including VR Planetarium, VR Moon, and Space-Coaster-VR. Participants use 3D glasses with smart phones for this space virtual experience. 4. The Daycare Visit We were delighted by the visit of Effat University day care children in to space festival. The children enjoyed festival theme and activities. 5. Others Attendees of the space festival enjoyed a space suite photo booth and were offered free space themed cookies and informative notebooks about Remote Sensing. Some stores in the city of Jeddah participate in the event including Chill N2 for Nitrogen ice cream, Skin_KSA for customize mobile covers for the space, and Sugar Rush for cotton candy. 6. Publicity The Effat University Space Festival was covered by various media venues. There were posts about the event in four Saudi newspapers: Okaz, Al Riyadh, Al-Madina, and AlWatan as well as Sayyedaty Magazin. Additional, all space festival pictures were posted in Effat Instagram account. Total social media activities is 980 participation. Acknowledgement The success of this event was an outcome of tireless endeavors of all parties participated in the planning and arrangement of the event. We thank Dr. Haifa Jamal Al-Lail the president of Effat University for her continuous support in expanding our horizons to new frontiers. We also truly appreciate all the sincere efforts of the College of Engineering, Public Relations Department, and Students Affairs, Information Technology Department, and the organizing team and volunteering students. |
