| Report on the Results: | WSW 2009, was celebrated worldwide from 4-10 october. As a SPACE school member, the astronomy club of hillwoods academy planned various activities for the students of classes 6-12.As the world space week 2009 has a theme space for education, various events were planned keeping the theme in mind. Following 8 EVENTS were organised in the school premises: 1.Drawing and painting competition with theme conquest on moon, settlements on moon. Above topic was given to students and they were asked to paint as per there imagination and submit the paintings. Entries received for the competition were really well thought and imaginative. Children expressed their inner self and views about the future of space in a very interesting way!! 2.Slogan writing competition, theme - CHANDREYAN-2 Students were asked to write slogans for our next mission to moon. Keeping in mind, the success of chandryan in finding signs of water on moon, students let their imagination run wild to write slogans. 3.Finding out local noon. Using sun as our daytime clock, students made use of the knowledge gained in the sessions on Time and direction in the space club and found local time by using various objects. Apart from Gnomon which is part of their astronomy kit, they used Pepsi bottle, wickets and basketball pole as makeshift gnomon. The time of local noon found by them was within 2 minutes of actual noon!!!! 4.Eratosthenes experiment. Using the data obtained from the local noon experiment, students utilised it to find the size of the earth as Eratosthenes had done 2300 years back. The value for the circumference of the earth found by the students is quite close to the accepted values for the same. 5.Finding North-South line. A line was marked using the local noon method to show students of the school making them aware of the directions. They were quite surprised to know that with a simple experiment one can find exactly north south direction!!! 6. Making a sundial Students made a an equatorial sundial from thermocol sheet and demonstrated it to the rest of the school students. 6.Movie on Discovery channel space station and beyond and Expedition 13 to ISS. Students enjoyed the movie screening and came to know about how astronauts live in space. Students really enjoyed the movie; they were highly interactive during the session and came up with their own ideas. 7. Talk Show on Is moon the next destination for mankind. Students participated in talk show with full enthusiasm. I feel the talk show has taken them to next level of knowledge and would have generated the curiosity in young minds to probe further. Apart from the celebrations in the school for the WSW. I on personal level organised activities as events in my colony where I showed kids Iridium flare, Jupiter watch and constellation watch from the park in my colony. All the events have been listed on the wsw calendar. I have already sent some photographs of the events by mail. I will be sending the paintings and slogans as the school repopens after the vacations. I thank SPACE for encouragement and support for the world space week celebrations.
