| Report on the Results: | WSW 2010 The 10th World Space Week was successfully celebrated at K J Choksi Public Library at Bharuch city and Udgam School for Children, Ahmedabad. The K J Choksi Public library is one of the best state of art facility in the small town like Bharuch. Unfortunately I came to know that in the city there is not a single Book Store for general books other than school/college curriculum. So, it was a great opportunity for me to present the subject to more than 1000 school children, 150 plus teachers / principals and parents. To ignite the fire, a small spark was required. So first I conducted teachers’ orientation on 21st September, 2010. 37 teachers / principals attended the half day workshop. They were called to enjoy interactive slide show of solar system basics. It was very nice experience for me to understand their mindset as well information depth they had about the subject. Then they were taken to bilingual poster exhibition (This exhibition was prepared for WSW and mounted permanently at the library premise) at the 1st floor of the library to give glimpse of information about different celestial objects. Nearly ‘50’ astronomy and space science related books were displayed to give slight better exposure which, they liked very much. At last they were taken to game zone where, solar system jigsaw puzzle and game about nature of planets amazed them. Though it was created for students specially, teachers also enjoyed playing game. After the workshop I asked to volunteer for the WSW during 4th to 10th October and surprisingly 10 of them came forward. They helped us during the space week with full enthusiasm. Nearly all schools of the town were invited slot wise, to enjoy the WSW. Nearly 1,150 school students from 6th to 9th standards visited. They enjoyed bilingual film made by me on solar system followed by small quiz, exhibition bay, books and lastly the game zone. On 7th October, Jupiter observation program was conducted to give Galilean experience to general public. Many people enjoyed telescopic observation for the first time in their life. Due to rush, the count was not possible. On the 9th October, 2010 three different competitions were organized, namely Quiz, Painting and Essay writing. The trustee of the library, main consultant of the library and I specifically remained present to enjoy, students’ & teachers’ enthusiasm towards understanding the subject. Many students participated and enjoyed competitions with spirit. Awards and prizes were also distributed to boost them. Winners for competitions : Quiz 19 students have participated from 8 schools Result: 1st prize Amity School & Aditya Birla Public School Runners Up Faith Calvary School Painting 10 student have participated from 10 schools Result: 1st prize Ellied School & Runners Up Aditya Birla Public School Essay 8 students have participated from 8 schools Result: 1st prize Aditya Birla Public School Runners up Swaminarayan school. The media coverage was also very good. Local TV channel & newspaper gave very good coverage about the activity and appreciated the efforts made. The best part as outcome of WSW is they are now ready to have astronomy club for the regular activities like observation and discussions. While WSW 2010 celebration was going on at Bharuch, I gave basic understanding about why are we celebrating WSW and what is the importance of space study to students of Udgam School for Children at Thaltej, Ahmedabad along with underprivileged students adopted by Visamo Kids Foundation. In three days’ programs, students also enjoyed close vicinity of Jupiter through telescope. |
