Report on the Results:  NIT-T's microwave group celebrates world space week Special Correspondent Share · print · T+ 6 : World Space Week is being celebrated by Microwave Group of National Institute of Technology – Tiruchi (NIT-T) with larger significance this year. Postgraduate students and research students of the Microwave group have designed an antenna that could be operated at 2.45 gigahertz, ideally suiting telemedicine applications and wearable body area network. ‘Microwaves in Telemedicine’, a paper authored by S. Raghavan, Professor, Electronics and Communications Engineering, has been selected for presentation at the international telemedicine conference to be conducted during December. The paper delves into the properties of microwave energy in inducing hyperthermia with reference to the treatment of malignant tumours. Likewise, a research paper on ‘metamaterial’ by Sumanto Bose, a final year student, has been accepted by an international journal. An alumni and a Research Scholar Prof.S.Suganthi had submitted a synopsis on her research work "METAMATERIAL ANTENNA" . Students, Prof. Raghavan said, have been carrying out work on metamaterials which make the microstrip antenna more attractive. Thanks to the recent visit by Space Scientist Valarmathi, the brain behind Radar Image Satellite – 1, who pictorially explained techniques and challenges involved in the launch of the satellite. Her inspiring talk prompted students to take part in space-related technology. Two PG students were shortlisted for the ISRO interview, and two students have joined the Brahmos project. Lectures by space scientists, particularly ISRO scientists, into real-time problems, are to be organised. Indian Space Research Organization, which competes globally, has made significant contributions in telemedicine, satellite navigation, search and resource operations, disaster management, maritime routing, environmental security, monitoring deforestations and desertification, monitoring urban sprawl and energy and life security. The Microwave group is a globally registered participant to celebrate the event, Prof. Raghavan said informing that World Space Week involving participation of 65 nations across the world was initiated by UN General Assembly. During this week, the contributions of space science and technology for betterment of mankind will be discussed. This year’s theme is ‘Space for Human Safety and Security’ to inspire and motivate children to take up space science. On the significance of the week, Dr. Raghavan, said: The then Soviet Union launched Sputnik – 1 on October 4 in 1957, and the Outer Space Treaty, the basis for international space law, came into effect on October 10, 1967. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- •Students have designed an antenna that could be operated at 2.45 gigahertz •Paper on ‘Microwaves in Telemedicine’ selected for presentation at international conference NEWS PAPER (THE HINDU)REPORT -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- More In: TAMIL NADU | NATIONAL
