Event Name: | Mars: A Home for the Future? |
Event Description: | A discussion panel on the future of Mars exploration, the robotic present and the future installation of a human base with all the requirements in life support that this implies, most probably using technologies such as MELiSSA. MELiSSA is the acronym of Micro-Ecological Life Support System Alternative, an innovative European Space Agency project which commenced as part of a life support technologies research programme to test the feasibility of a long-term crewed space mission. Some of the speakers will be: -Francesc Godia is a full Professor of Chemical Engineering and vice-Rector at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, where he has developed all his academic work. His main field of research is Biochemical Engineering, particularly animal cell technology, bioreactor and bioprocess design and operation, cel.lular and tissue engineering, and biological life support in Space. He is PO of the MELiSSA project for ESA in the UAB in Barcelona. -Ignasi Casanova is Head of Science Team. Ignasi is professor of Materials Chemistry at the Technical University of Catalonia (UPC, Barcelona Tech). His research interests have evolved from Planetary Chemistry, to engineering design of space science instruments. He’s been co-investigator in some missions of the European Space Agency (SMART-1, Mars Express), has served as a member of the Exploration Science and Technology Advisory Group of the European Space Agency. |
