Event Description:  On October 2-3, 2021, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration is inviting coders, entrepreneurs, scientists, designers, storytellers, makers, builders, artists, and technologists to participate in a virtual hackathon--The NASA International Space Apps Challenge. During a period of 48 hours, participants from around the world will create virtual teams and use Earth observation data to develop solutions to issues our world is facing. To mark the tenth year of the International Space Apps Challenge, NASA is collaborating with nine international space agency partners to bring the largest global hackathon in the world to even more communities. Space Agencies will work together to introduce problem-solvers worldwide to free and open data. By using this data to solve challenges, Space Apps teams will share in the creation and application of the knowledge that will expand our understanding through new scientific discoveries and help us improve life on Earth. Space Apps inspires collaboration, creativity, and critical thinking that fosters interest in Earth and space science and exploration. Our mission is to leverage this interest to encourage the growth and diversity of the next generation of scientists, technologists, designers, storytellers, and engineers. In the Philippines, we witnessed how a community of software developers from northern and central Luzon grew and encouraged fellow Filipinos in other parts of the country to recognize the importance of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM), in collaboration with the government, industry, and academe. Three winners and finalists, including a winner and finalist from the 2021 Earth observing dashboard hackathon brought honor and pride for the country. Space Apps is managed by the Earth Science Division, Science Mission Directorate, at NASA Headquarters in Washington, DC. It is organized in collaboration with Booz Allen Hamilton, SecondMuse, and Mindgrub, and the NASA Open Innovation Applied Sciences Program.
