Report on the Results:  Word Space Week Celebrations (WSW 2013) along with unique workshop Recent Challenges in MVIEW 2013 04-05 Oct 2013 Its first of its kind the Word Space Week Celebrations programme WSW 2013 was organized on 04 -05 Oct 2013 by the Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering (ECE) of Shri Angalamman College of Engineering & Technology (SACET), Trichy with a mentoring support from National Institute of Technology, Trichy, India which motivated younger engineering minds to start thinking of becoming scientists in space research organizations and of the betterment of human kinds for contributing to the society with a view to protect our mother earth from the hazards due to global temperature raise and mass pollutions. Around 250 members including ECE staff and students of SACET were the participants. The program organized by the convenor Dr.S.Suganthi and her team of members Prof.Rajalakshmi and Prof.Vinayagamoorthy as coordinators. It was felicitated by Er.M.Subramaniam, College Chairman who stressed the need for students to invent useful gadgets for human community using the knowledge gained. As part of the celebration, students modeled few satellites and rockets as a mark of respect to our Indian Space programme and astronauts. They also took owe through procession and by reading out quotations representing saving our mother earth. The importance of microwaves in space research and in health care industry was elaborated by Dr.Raghavan, Professor NIT-Trichy. He further touched upon the issues of Microwave Power Transmissions from specially designed geostationary power satellites. He called for researchers and students to concentrate on the design issues of Rectennas (antennas with some rectifying electronic circuits) structures leading to kilometers in size to be constructed on the ground for the reception of high power microwaves, efficient conversion of the same into electrical energy and the distribution. He mentioned that creamy engineering students all over our country should come forward to take up challenging space scientist jobs instead of simply becoming software/ IT professionals. He mentioned that the World Space Week was declared in 1999 by the United Nations General Assembly to celebrate various space related events on the earth from October 4 to 10 every year commemorating two great events: launch of first human- made earth satellite Sputnik 1 on October 4, 1957, and the signing of the treaty on the principles and ethics in using the outer space, including the moon and other celestial bodies for the welfare of human kind, on October 10, 1967. In remembrance to that it is being celebrated every year worldwide. He felt proud to mention India’s Mars Mission Programme to take place in October 2013 as announced already by ISRO. He stated that the solar energy reception in the space at 36,000km altitude from the earth surface with the help of special satellites with antennas running into kilometers in size though appearing tough to implement, the years are not far away as the currently available exhausting energy resources are alarming towards immediate alternative solutions. When implemented there is no wonder that even our mobile phones can simple pick up microwave energy coming from satellite directly and get the required power supply for their operations. The convenor Dr.Suganthi spoke on the awareness one should cultivate on the issues of e-waste due to technological changes and modernization. She mentioned that India excels in space technology and greatly progresses to explore new ventures through launching our own rockets, satellites, gravity gradient satellites (like Chandrayaan), space explorers, spacecraft to Mars etc. ISRO Scientist Praveen Chandran an Alumnus of NIT-Trichy working at Master Control Facility (MCF-ISRO) of Hassan, Karnataka, highlighted the pathway to reach ISRO scientist positions. Dr.Christraj, Principal addressed the possible methods of establishing sustainable solar energy for the future generations with a good amount of statistical analysis through the use of solar power concentrators. Dr.Saivarau, Dean spoke on the mathematics needed for nature and the importance of mathematics in engineering problem solving with a view to wipe out the aversion on the subject existing for long among engineering students largely. The participants of the workshop dispersed the halls with the new thrilling thoughts in their minds on the conceptual ideas of the future Satellite Power Stations and their benefits highlighted in the workshop.
