Event Name:  Astrolab - workshop
Event Description:  The "Astrolab" workshop, scheduled for October 3, 2024, at 5:45 PM at the Vukovar City Library in celebration of World Space Week, is designed to allow children and young people to explore the fascinating world of space and natural sciences through engaging experiments and a quiz. The central part of the workshop is the Space Quiz – a journey through galaxies, where participants will tackle seven intriguing questions about space, planets, and galaxies. The quiz will encourage thinking about space phenomena while linking them to the principles of natural sciences. The experiments following the quiz will further strengthen the connection between scientific principles and space exploration. The volcano experiment, although simulating an eruption on Earth, will enable participants to relate this phenomenon to volcanic activity on planets like Venus or Mars. Observing microscopic organisms in a drop of water will emphasize the importance of exploring life at the microscopic level, reminiscent of the search for potential life forms on other planets. The Beilstein test for halogens, in addition to revealing the chemical composition of substances, will introduce the participants to the study of chemical compounds that can be found in space materials. Finally, the experiment with blue crystals that change color when heated will illustrate how substances transform under different conditions, which is crucial for understanding extreme space environments. The "Astrolab" workshop will provide participants with an opportunity to dive into the world of space through fun and experiments, exploring how space science impacts everyday life, all in the spirit of World Space Week.

The workshop "Astrolab" was held on October 3, 2024, at the Vukovar City Library in honor of World Space Week. Children and young people gathered to explore the fascinating world of space and natural sciences through interactive experiments, a quiz, and collaboration. The atmosphere, filled with curiosity and enthusiasm, reflected a strong desire for learning and discovery. The Space Quiz – a journey through galaxies – with its intriguing questions about planets and galaxies, prompted the children and young people to think critically and engage in discussions. With each answer, participants learned about the basics of space phenomena, such as planetary rotation, the size of galaxies, and the natural laws governing the universe. The quiz provided an opportunity for collaboration, allowing participants to exchange ideas and come to joint solutions, thereby enriching their knowledge and experiences. The experiments that followed the quiz offered an exciting insight into the connection between scientific principles and space exploration. The attendees enthusiastically performed the volcano experiment, observing an eruption that simulated volcanic activity on Mars and Venus. Together, they analyzed the process, discussing the similarities and differences between volcanoes on Earth and those in space. During the water drop experiment, participants used a microscope to explore the microscopic world, linking it to the search for life on other planets. Fascinated by what they observed, they discussed the possibilities of life existing in space and the importance of scientific research in this field. The Beilstein test on halogen elements was another exciting moment of the workshop. Through this simple experiment, participants gained insight into the chemical compounds that can be found in space. They actively engaged, asking questions and reflecting on how scientists analyze space materials. The experiment with blue crystals, which changed color when heated, was particularly interesting to the participants. They observed how substances transform under different conditions, helping them understand how extreme conditions in space can affect the space environment. Learning about space is essential for a better understanding of our place in the universe. It encourages us to confront fundamental questions about our existence, origin, and future. Space exploration opens the door to many scientific disciplines – from astronomy and physics to biology and chemistry – and teaches us about the laws that govern beyond the boundaries of our planet. As we study other planets, stars, and galaxies, we realize how unique Earth is, yet how connected we are with the rest of the universe. Moreover, space exploration provides insights into potential future challenges humanity will face. Climate change, resource depletion, and population growth inspire thinking about future possibilities, such as settling on other planets, sustainable energy forms, and preserving our planet through technological innovations. Space research has led to numerous technological breakthroughs that we use in everyday life, such as satellite communications, GPS systems, and new materials. Learning about space encourages children and young people to think critically, be creative, and stay curious. Space, with its unexplored vastness, sparks imagination and invites continuous exploration. It teaches us that knowledge is limitless and that there is always something new to discover, motivating us to constantly push our own boundaries. The educational workshop "Astrolab" provided an opportunity for learning, socializing, collaboration, and fun. The workshop was designed and organized by teachers from Vukovar Gymnasium: Antonija Milić, Sanja Pavlović Šijanović, and Davor Šijanović. Through joint activities, the participants expanded their knowledge of space while also making new acquaintances and strengthening existing friendships, proving that learning can be both fun and inspiring. The workshop fully met the goals of World Space Week, leaving a lasting impression on all who attended.
