Event Name:  World Space Week 2015 Celebrations
Event Description:  ISRO units in Trivandrum viz., Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre, Liquid Propulsion Systems Centre and ISRO Inertial Systems Unit is celbrating World Space Week from October 1 to 9. Several events like State level painting competition for school students relevant to the theme discovery on 27th Sept, 2015, State level Essay Competition for school students for which prizes will be given in VSSC on 9th October after evaluation, Programme for senior citizens on 6th October 2015, Open House at VSSC for general public and sounding rocket launches on 7th, 8th & 9th October, Students workshop at VSSC on 7th October, Lectures at schools by resource persons covering the schools of Kerala from 4th to 10th October, facilitating schools to celebrate WSW from 4th October to 10th October, Space week programmes through media, etc are the programmes planned.

Report on the Results:  World Space Week in ISRO Thiruvananthapuram World Space Week was organised jointly by the three Centres of ISRO at Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala State viz., Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC), Liquid Propulsion Systems Centre (LPSC) and ISRO Inertial Systems Unit (IISU) with the theme ‘Discovery’. Many new events were added and some of the events were scaled up with a focus to popularise the application of Space technology for the benefit of common man. Shri KM Chandrasekhar, Vice Chairman, Kerala State Planning Board inaugurated the WSW 2015 celebrations in a function held at VSSC Auditorium on October 1, 2015. The programme commenced with an invocation followed by a video of WSW celebrations conducted in the previous years. Dr K Sivan, Director, VSSC presided over the function. Shri R Umamaheswaran, Chairman, Steering Committee welcomed the gathering. Dr S Aravamuthan, Alternate Chairman, Steering Committee/Deputy Director, VSSC (MSA) gave a summary of the programme. Shri S Somanath, Director, LPSC, Dr PP Mohanlal, Director, IISU, Shri MV Dhekane, Associate Director, VSSC, Dr Biju Jacob, Chief Controller, VSSC and Shri G Sajan, Deputy Director, Doordarshan offered felicitations. Shri SR Vijayamohanakumar, Convener, Steering Committee proposed the vote of thanks. Lecture @ Schools Lecture programmes on topics related to Space technology and applications were conducted in schools, teacher training institutes, ITIs and colleges. One twenty three resource persons from VSSC/LPSC/IISU visited and delivered lectures in educational institutions in all districts of Kerala and a few other States in India. The registration for the programme was enabled online. Lecture programmes were conducted in all 15 Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalya (JNV) schools in Kerala (including Mahe). Each JNV also brought selected students from nearby rural schools to their premises, thereby extending the reach of the programme further. Special outreach programme was conducted in association with Kerala Forest and Wild Life Department along with Wildlife Week (October, 2-8) celebrations. Lecture programmes were organised in various rural schools in places like Attappady and Idamalakkudy. In collaboration with the office of Minister for Welfare of Scheduled Tribes, Youth Affairs, Government of Kerala, programmes were conducted in Kasaragod, Kannur, Wayanad and Thiruvananthapuram. Lecture programmes were organised at Institution of Engineers (India) and Kerala State Science and Technology Museum, Thiruvananthapuram. Special programmes were conducted for differently abled children in Adarsh Special School, Ernakulam and National Institute for Speech and Hearing (NISH) in Thiruvananthapuram. Half day Seminar was conducted in Governement Women’s College on the benefits of Space programme on October 8, 2015. Shri PK Abdu Rabb, Hon’ble Minister of Education, Kerala state inaugurated the programme and Dr K Sivan, Director, VSSC presided over the function followed by two lectures. A lively interactive session was organised with the students. The programme was beneficial for 400 institutions reaching out to around 65,000 children. Space Expo As part of the celebrations, an expo highlighting the applications of Space based technologies for the benefit of common man was organised during October 5-10, 2015 at Kanakakunnu Palace, Thiruvananthapuram. Shri Oommen Chandy, Hon’ble Chief Minister of Kerala inaugurated the event on October 5, 2015 at 6.00 pm. Dr K Sivan, Director, VSSC presided over the function. Shri K Muraleedharan MLA released the theme video of Space Expo. Smt K Chandrika, Hon’ble Mayor of Trivandrum released the brochure and trigger card of Sakaar, an augmented reality application. Shri Oommen Chandy appreciated the efforts of ISRO in reaching out to public, making them aware of benefits of Space technology. Dr K Sivan in his address, brought out the societal applications of space based technologies for improving the life standards of common man in India. There were 20 stalls highlighting Space Science applications with models of satellites and Launch Vehicles, videos and animations of all ISRO missions, current programmes and future missions of ISRO. As part of the Space Expo, an ‘Open Forum’ was conducted on Friday October 9, 2015, with the participation of ISRO panel of experts, public and media. Shri MA Baby MLA, (Former Minister of Education Kerala) Shri John Mundakkayam, Bureau Chief, Malayala Manorama, Dr V Jebamalai, Former Principal Adviser UNIDO, Dr K Sivan, Director, VSSC and other panelists from ISRO participated in the Open Forum. Space Expo had an overwhelming response from the public and the students. Familiarisation programme for Senior Residents One day programme for selected senior residents of the city, a new initiative in WSW, was conducted on October 6, 2015 with participation of 250 members of various Residence Associations of Thiruvananthapuram. The programme was inaugurated by Dr K Sivan, Director, VSSC. In his address he highlighted the motivation for organising the programme and appraised the participants that the Space programmes should be given wider publicity among fellow citizens so that its benefits reach all sections of the society. The inauguration was followed by two popular lectures by Shri P Radhakrishnan and Shri CR Thomas on ‘Space Technologies to Common man’ and ‘Evolution of Indian Space Programmes’ respectively. This was followed by an interactive session attended by Shri S Somanath, Director, LPSC, Dr PP Mohanlal, Director, IISU, Shri P Radhakrishnan and Shri CR Thomas. The participants witnessed a balloon launch and also visited the Control Centre and Space Museum. Workshop for School Students Around 400 students from High Schools and Higher Secondary Schools across the length and breadth of Kerala, attended the one day Students’ Workshop on October 7, 2015. 210 of these students were selected from the gifted children programme under the Directorate of Public Instruction, Government of Kerala. This year, 25 tribal students from as far as Kuppady in Wayanad District were brought for the programme. Forty five students were brought to VSSC from Achankovil, a backward hamlet in Pathanamthitta district. Also, students from various orphanages in and around Thiruvananthapuram were brought to VSSC, accompanied by student coordinators and DPI staff. The workshop was inaugurated by Dr PP Mohanlal, Director, IISU. Smt MS Jaya IAS, Director of Public Instruction and Shri R Umamaheswaran, Chairman, Steering Committee offered felicitations. The inaugural session was followed by two lectures and an interaction session. The students also witnessed a sounding rocket launch followed by a visit to Space Museum. The programme was co-ordinated and supported by IISU. All Kerala Painting Competition The All Kerala Painting Competition was held on September 27, 2015 with the lead role from LPSC. The event was organized for students of class I-XII across the State simultaneously in three zones, Thiruvananthapuram, Thrissur and Kozhikode. The competition was conducted for Sub-Junior, Junior and Senior categories. The theme for the painting contest was ‘Elevating Life to New Highs-Role of Space Science and Technology’ for the senior category ‘A World Beyond Earth-Imagine’ for the junior category and for the sub-junior category, the theme was open. In Thiruvananthapuram zone, the event was inaugurated by renowned artist Shri BD Dathan at Chandrasekharan Nair Stadium. During the inaugural session he inspired the young artists by displaying a glimpse of his immense artistic talent with an on-the-spot art work and a short speech. As many as 375 students took part in the event from the five southern districts of Kerala. In Thrissur zone, 177 school students from four central districts of Kerala participated in the competition at The Chaldean Syrian Higher Secondary School, Thrissur. The Government Vocational Higher Secondary School, Nadakkavu, Kozhikode was the venue of the competitions held for the northern zone of the State. 174 young contestants participated from different schools of the five northern districts of Kerala. Inter School Quiz Competition The All Kerala Inter School Quiz Competition was held in three zones for students of Class X-XII. The event was held on Saturday, October 3, 2015 simultaneously in all three zones at State Central Library, Thiruvananthapuram, Chaldean Syrian Higher Secondary School, Thrissur and Regional Science Centre & Planetarium, Kozhikode. The quiz competition consisted of a preliminary written round for all the participants. Top six teams from the preliminary round were selected for the finals which consisted of seven rounds in oral format. A total of 120 teams participated in the event from the North zone, 118 teams from Idukki, Kottayam, Ernakulam, Palakkad and Thrissur districts participated in the Central zone and 131 teams participated in the programme in the South zone. All Kerala Essay Competition The competition was conducted in three languages- English, Malayalam and Hindi for students of Class VIII- X based on the topic ‘Discovering New Earths’. Total of 1143 essays were received and the winners received the prizes at the valedictory function held on October 9, 2015. The awards were given for the best essays in three languages. The English essay by Kum Fiza Parveen, Class X, AJ John Memorial High School, Chathangottunada won the GSLV award instituted by Shri RV Perumal, former Director, LPSC, for the best of the best essays. The award carries a gold medal, a memento and a certificate. Programmes through Electronic Media Ten programmes with focus on Space applications to common man were organised through All India Radio (AM & FM), Doordarshan-Malayalam and ViCTERS TV channels. Two talks, an interview and a live phone-in programme called ‘Hello Akashavani’ were broadcast through All India Radio (AM) channel during the week. A special interview programme interspaced with songs was broadcast in AIR’s Anathapuri FM channel. Three live programmes, one panel discussion and two phone-in interview programmes were telecast in Doordarshan (Malayalam) TV channel. In ViCTERS, a live phone-in interview programme and presentation on Space application were organised. Senior engineers from VSSC, LPSC and IISU, including Directors, Project Directors and Deputy Directors participated in the programmes as guests/speakers. In addition, ViCTERS channel telecast a series of programmes on Space activities during the week. Open House at Space Museum Open House at Space Museum was another major event during the celebration. Special arrangements were made to enable the public to visit Space Museum and witness RH-200 launch on three days from October 7-9. About 11,000 people visited the museum and witnessed the RH-200 launch. World Space Week at Schools To capture the true spirit of WSW, ISRO tries to facilitate more and more schools to celebrate WSW. Wide publicity was given for encouraging the celebrations at schools through newspapers, IT@School, Directorates of Higher Secondary, Vocational Higher Secondary and Public Instruction. An educational resource document based on the theme was circulated. The best school in each revenue district of Kerala will be given an award after evaluation of the reports submitted. World Space Week Celebration-College Of Engineering Adoor World Space Week has grown into the largest public space event on Earth. Thousands of people in over 70 countries celebrated the benefits of space and the excitement about space exploration. Participation has seen giant leaps, more than doubling over the last two years. A celebration of world space week was observed in the college of Engineering Adoor by FORUM(FRATERNITY OF ROYAL UNITED MECHANICALS), Mechanical Association. The event was inaugurated by Sri. R Umamaheswaran, Project Director, GSLV/ISRO. He delivered a lecture on the topic “Launch Vehicle Programs of ISRO”. The lecture included many personal stories and interesting insights into the most successful of ISRO’s moon and mars orbiter missions. Various activities for school and college students were organized as part of the celebration. The highlight of the event was the water rocket launching competition. Six teams from different batches of the college participated. A class on “rocket science” was delivered by Sri.Vineeshkumar, B Tech student at Government LP School Manakala and Thuvayoor North LP School. The students were also given a detailed class on water rocket principle, its working and making. The celebrations showed enthusiastic participation from all batches within the department. Competition for Employees The competitions for employees were conducted during October 7-8, 2015 and the event was inaugurated by Dr K Sivan, Director, VSSC on October 7, 2015. Spacetoon (Theme: Exploration of Earth by Aliens) was conducted simultaneously at VSSC and LPSC. The two events, Interactive Debate and Play on stage were organised on October 8, 2015. Also two online events Space Crossword and WSW Promo video contest (Theme: Space at your doorstep, Space applications for common man) were also conducted. The celebrations for the year came to an end with the valedictory function held at Dr Srinivasan Auditorium on October 9, 2015. Dr K Sivan, Director, VSSC presided over the function. Shri Kris Gopalakrishnan, Former Executive Vice Chairman, Infosys was the chief guest. Shri R Umamaheswaran, Chairman, Steering Committee/Project Director, GSLV delivered the welcome address. Shri SR Vijayamohanakumar, Convener, Steering Committee, presented the summary report and a detailed video on the various events organised in connection with WSW. Dr PP Mohanlal, Director, LPSC, Dr Biju Jacob, Chief Controller, VSSC offered felicitations. Prizes for the winners of various competitions were distributed by the chief guest. Smt U Sreerekha, Co-Convener proposed the vote of thanks.
