Event Name:  World Space week-2015 celebrations
Event Description:  The World Space Week Association (WSWA) began in 1980 as the promotor of “Spaceweek”, a celebration of the first Moon landing, each July. The first celebration in Houston that year was led by Ernie Hillje, Troy Welch, David Koch, and Dennis Stone (see picture, left to right). In 1981 they formed “Spaceweek National Headquarters” to organize a nationwide celebration in the United States. By 1999 Spaceweek had spread to over 15 nations, when the UN General Assembly declared “World Space Week” to be held every year from 4 to 10 October. The new World Space Week Association took responsibility to organize this event on behalf of the United Nations from then onwards. The first UN-declared celebration of World Space Week took place in 2000. This year as the theme was discovery and also we had the presence of the National coordinator for India for world space week to inaugurate world space week 2015 at our university the celebrations were extraordinary.

Report on the Results:  The following report is a summary of the events organised as part of WSW 2015. Day 1: The celebrations for the year 2015 commenced with a star gazing session organised by Suvriti Dhawan in the Tech park lawns on 4/10/2015 under the guidance of Mr. CB Devgun, National Coordinator for India World Space week. The team headed by Mr.S. Venkata Narayana, Zonal Manager of Space technology and Education Pvt. Ltd set up the Telescope and guided the students. Mr. Devgun had an informal interaction session with the students of SRM University on various aspects of Space Exploration. Day2: An expert lecture on various aspects of Space Research and the associated challenges was organised in the Electrical Engineering seminar hall from 2.00 pm to 5.00 pm. Prof.A. Muthu, faculty of Aerospace engineering introduced the speaker Mr. CB Devgun national coordinator, India for World Space Week to the audience. Mr.CB Devgun , gave a scintillating talk on Space Exploration, its history, and the various milestones of Space research. He emphasized on the importance of inculcating the Scientific Temper in the minds of all human beings and especially of students. His lecture was made exceptionally lively by the large number of breathtaking photographs personally snapped by him. Mr. Devgun’s lecture was extremely well received by the audience. In particular his unique style of raising questions related to Astronomy, seeking answers from students before presenting a comprehensive answer to the question made his lecture a treat to the inquisitive minds. Day 3: On the third day of WSW’15 celebrations at SRM University, A Science quiz on space exploration was organised by the students of first year B.Tech (Aerospace engineering). This event captioned “THINK QUEST” attracted a large number of participants. Day 4: A competition called “Race to Mars” was held on the 4th day by Mr. Parv Kumar Goyal and his associates. This event had three stages namely Quiz round, Black Hole and Area -51. In this event the participants were asked to complete an activity with an element of challenge and those who completed that activity entered the next round involving a bigger challenge. Day 5: A humorous play titled “Meet the Scientist” was enacted by Aerospace Engineering students. The theme was a take off on historic instances of petty squabbling among scientists (e.g Newton Vs Liebniz regarding the invention of Calculus) . The play especially the message appealing for unity was widely acclaimed. Days 6& 7: The World Space Week 2015 celebrations at SRM University came to an end with a Glider Making Workshop, organized by Mohit Vishal under the guidance of A. Vinoth Kumar (Faculty of Department of Aerospace). In this event, more than 60 students had hands on experience of glider making using balsa wood sheet. With a lot of enthusiasm the participants made a glider each in a team of two members. This helped to inculcate the team spirit besides understanding the challenges involved in making a glider. Finally in the valedictory function held on 12/10/2015, all the prizewinners were given mementoes by Dr. R. Vasudevan, Head of Aerospace Engineering department in acknowledgement of their efforts. In addition all the participants and organizers received certificates of merit. The function concluded with a resolution to set up an observatory at SRM University to be used fo promoting budding astronomers and their star gazing activities.
